The drink has been around since the 12th century with different stories of origin of who drank it first. However, it’s a very popular winter drink to have all over Greece, especially in Crete.

Even the monks drink Rakomelo because of the beneficial factors it has. Rakomelo is made by combining Raki or Tsipouro with honey and other ingredients such as cardamom and cinnamon.

So what beneficial factors does it have? Well, think of it as a magical warm potion that is a remedy for sore throats and coughs. Alcohol in general kills bacteria and honey helps soothe the throat. Cinnamon is filled with powerful medicinal properties including anti-inflammatory properties and can even help lower blood sugar levels.

Rakomelo works as an antidote, opening up the airways and can help fight your common cold during the winter period. Even though it’s usually served as a hot drink in restaurants, it can also be served as a cold drink or you can add some to your tea.
